In the early 1980s, two little boys played and danced on the streets of North Hollywood, for the gain of a little money in their hands. When wearing Kmart caps, they will be able to sing the songs of The Beatles without any embarrassment. People walked by, and still none of them realized what they were going to become one day: Hollywood’s next big thing. There were none of those guys, other than the Phoenix twins, River, and Joaquin. They had been able to experience prosperity and fortune before, a decade ago, working together through the struggles of life and work. Joaquin was born on the 28th of October 1974 and came from a special family. Her Russian/Hungarian mother, Arlyn Dunetz, left her first husband and moved to the West Coast, where she met a good Irish/Spanish guy named John Lee Bottom. They found that they enjoyed a common pleasure in marrying and traveling in the United States. In 1970, in Madras, Oregon, they had their first River Jude Bottom child, before they had their second baby, Joaquin Raphael Bottom, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Each of the other three brothers, Storm, Liberty and Season, were born in separate cities as well. They modified their surname to Phoenix in 1978, after Summer’s birth. Joaquin also chose to change his first name to Leaf, since he was furious about how his name was mispronounced by people. “I changed my name because no one could pronounce ‘Joaquin’ in the United States, and as a boy I used to get so humiliated about it. Every kid in my family had perfect names and I got ‘Joaquin.’ I said ‘This is not cool.’ I can’t even say it.’ But he was credited as Leaf for the next eleven years.
John, who served under his care as a carpenter with five children, did not provide much for his relatives. They were weak, but their hope was not lost.
