Mya Marie Harrison was born in Washington, D.C, on October 10, 197The mother of an accountant named Theresa, and the father of a guitarist named Sherman Harrison. She inherits the Italian heritage from her mother’s hand, while she owns the African American legacy plus the imaginative blood from her father’s. Two new boys named Chaz and Nijel were both born to the family after she was born. As a girl, Mya took an interest in dance, dancing in particular. She even took a lesson in violin playing and singing, although it took much of her time to dance. She had formed a dance party named ‘Tappers With Attitude’ until she debuted as a child,

which provided her the knowledge of acting. She travelled to New York to research dance theater in Harlem after quitting the party. The jolly teenager drew the interest of Savion Glover, the Broadway choreographer, who soon became his favorite pupil. Later on, Mya would get the first job she loved and was decent at, a dance teacher.

In the meantime, her father kept hoping back at home that Mya could do something else with her singing abilities. Recording his daughter’s demo tape, Sherman submitted it to the President of University Music, Hagg Islam, who then transmitted it to Interscope. Long story short, when she was just 18 years old, Mya was signed to the mark. The young and enthusiastic singer released her first song, helped by Dru Hill, Babyface, Dianne Warren and many other renowned artists, and she chose to title it after her name. Surprisingly,’ Mya’ got a warm reception from music fans that on the Billboard Hot 200 chart finally ranked at # 29, a relatively good position for a newcomer.

It was believed that the lead single from the album ‘It’s All About Me’ was the perfect starter for the album’s popularity, as were the next two songs, ‘Movin’ On ‘and’ My First Night With You.’ The album had achieved a platinum status by October 1998 and its artist acquired a street cred in the area of R’n She was nominated for the track ‘Movin’ On ‘at the 1999 Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards and won greater accomplishment when she worked on the album’ Ghetto Supastar (That Is What You Are)’ with Pras Michel and Ol’ Filthy Bastard. The song was included in the 1999 Grammy Awards nomination that brought Mya as an artist to an entirely fresh, different stage.
