When Arroyo was younger, his family relocated from Key West to Brooksville, where he attended Hernando High School. His professional baseball career started when he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the Major League Baseball 1995 Draft. He made his MLB debut with the club in 2000. In 2011, he agreed to a contract extension for $35 million, which would have allowed him to stay with the club for an additional three years after that. In the same season, he was diagnosed with mononucleosis and was unable to return to the field until he was completely healed, resulting in a 5.07 earned run average for the season.
