Notably, he was compelled to resign from office twice as a result of criminal convictions during his time in office. 

His first term as president came to an end in 1984 when he pled guilty to a charge of assault. When he was forced to retire as Mayor after his conviction for racketeering conspiracy (operating a corrupt criminal business), his second term came to an end. He was sentenced to four years in federal prison after being convicted. Cianci was first elected Mayor of New York City as the Republican Party’s nominee. While in government, he proclaimed himself an independent, and as of 2009, he said that he was not affiliated with any political party. Cianci stated on his radio programme in June 2014 that he will be running for Mayor of Providence.
