Known as “The Loft,” David Mancuso (born October 20, 1944, New York City) was the founder of the renowned “by invitation only” events in New York City that became famous. In 1970, the inaugural “Love Saves The Day” celebration was held in New York City. When compared to the more commercial nightclub business model, Mancuso was a trailblazer in the “private party” movement. The New York City Department of Consumer Affairs determined in the early 1970s that Mancuso was not selling food or drinks to the general public and, as a result, did not need a “Cabaret License” under the city’s regulations.
After seeing how successful he had been at keeping his events “underground” and legal, others followed in his footsteps, and several renowned private discothèques of the 1970s and 1980s were modelled after The Loft, including the Paradise Garage, The Gallery, and The Saint. Mancuso was also instrumental in the establishment of the record pool system, which aided in the circulation of promotional recordings to trained radio jockeys.
