Gary Kremen (born 1963) is an American entrepreneur who is credited with inventing internet dating, founding the personals website Match.com, being the first registrant of Sex.com, and establishing Clean Power Finance, among other things. He was born in the Chicago region and graduated from Niles West High School in 198He then went on to get bachelor’s degrees in electrical engineering and computer science from Northwestern University in 1985, followed by an MBA from Stanford University the following year. Kremen founded the software business Los Altos Technology in 1985 and served as its president and CEO until late 1992.
He established Electric Classifieds, Inc. in 1993, which was the first business to provide classified advertising on the Internet. In April 1995, he launched the online personals service Match.com, which had been funded by private investors since November 199He quit Match.com in March 1996 after running into difficulties with venture investors over his demand that the business service lucrative alternative market sectors, which included the LGBT market. He remained on the board of Electric Classifieds, which he co-founded. The company was sold to Cendant Corporation for $7 million in 1998, and Cendant then sold it to Ticketmaster for $50 million a year and a half later, against Kremen’s protests. Match.com was founded in 1995 by Kremen and his wife, Lisa. From 1995 to 1996, Kremen established and served as president of NetAngels.com, Inc., an Internet profiling and customization business that recommended web sites to consumers. His departure occurred after NetAngels joined with Boston personalization software company Firefly Network, Inc. in 1997, and Firefly was then sold to Microsoft in 1998 in a transaction valued at about $40 million. In 1999, he was identified as an equity-holding officer or director of Brightcube, Inc., which was a publicly traded company. Kremen is recognised as a main inventor on a 1995-filed invention for dynamic web pages, US patent number 5,706,434, which he subsequently sold for approximately $1,250,000.
As a result of his work, Kremen has been awarded two more patents in the field of financial-related systems management: US Patent Number 7,698,219 and US Patent Number 7,890,436A. 2007 New York Times storey on “millionaires who don’t feel wealthy” stated that Kremen assessed his net worth at $10 million. Kremen lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife and children. He is the creator of Clean Power Finance, Inc., a home solar finance start-up that received $6.9 million from investors in January 2010, $25 million from Kleiner Perkins in September 2011, $75 million from Google in September 2011, and $42 million from utility investors such as Duke Energy. In addition, he is the founder and chairman of Sociogramics, a financial services company that focuses on providing credit to the underbanked.
Sociogramics has raised seed capital from investors such as Tugboat Ventures, Harmony Venture Partners, Trinity Ventures, Greylock Partners, Claremont Creek Ventures, and QED Investors, among others. As a private and angel investor, Kremen has invested in approximately 50 businesses (individually or via venture capital firms) since 1993, with many of these companies having gone public or experienced liquidity events. In addition to being a founding investor, Kremen serves on the boards of directors for CrowdFlower, WaterSmart Software, and CapGain Solutions. He serves on the board of directors and as president of the Purissima Hills Water District, which he was elected to.
