Andrew Murray Walker, Template:Post-nominals (born 10 October 1923), better known by his stage name Murray Walker, is an English racing pundit and journalist who is now semi-retired. Walker worked with the BBC for the most of his career, however when the BBC lost the Formula One broadcasting contract to ITV, Walker remained to commentate on the sport despite the change in broadcaster. He has a unique, upbeat style of commenting that is easily identifiable. Since 1978, British television commentary of the Formula One season has been utilised by broadcasters all over the globe, including Australia and Japan, to provide coverage of the sport.
His catchphrase “…Unless I’m very much mistaken…” was a reference to the commentator’s curse, as he noted in an interview that he might praise a driver’s performance or predict that they would win the race, only for the driver to retire or crash out of the race shortly afterwards, hence his catchphrase “…Unless I’m very much mistaken…”, which might be followed by a correction “…And I am very much mistaken…” In addition to his gentlemanly and courteous behaviour, he is renowned for recognising the best in drivers who have garnered criticism in the past. Unlike other drivers, he seldom criticised them and tended to give the benefit of the doubt when determining who was to blame for accidents. When the 1994 Australian Grand Prix was overshadowed by the controversial crash between Michael Schumacher and Walker’s close friend Damon Hill, which determined Schumacher’s victory in the World Driver’s Championship in the German’s favour, Walker, unlike his fellow commentators at the time, most notably former 500cc Motorcycle World Champion Barry Sheene, refused to blame Schumacher for the crash outright.
