On February 16, 1987, Hasheem Thabeet (born Hashim Thabit Manka) was born in Tanzania and is a Tanzanian professional basketball player who is now a member of the Oklahoma City Thunder of the National Basketball Association. Thabeet stands at 7 feet 3 inches (2.21 metres) tall, making him the tallest current player in the NBA. After his time with the Connecticut Huskies, he was selected by the Memphis Grizzlies in the second round of the 2009 NBA Draft as the second overall selection.
Thabeet was the tallest player to ever suit up for the Huskies, standing at 6’7″. He did not begin to play basketball until he was 15 years old, when he started to observe pickup games in Tanzania with his father. Thabeet came to the United States from Tanzania, where he was proficient in Swahili and French but had limited knowledge of English.
