He was born on September 19, 1962, in Los Angeles, California, and is an American musical artist, backup dancer, and comic actor. He has appeared in music videos for artists such as Janet Jackson and Prince, but he is most recognised for his work with the television show The Time. Benton Lewis is the half-brother of Time bassist Terry Lewis, and he was a key member of the band’s early development, working closely with them behind the scenes. Morris Day, the band’s main vocalist, requested that someone bring him a mirror during one of their performances. 

A mirror from the club’s bathroom was ripped out of the wall by Benton, who then brought it on stage for Day to use to comb his hair. This performance boosted Benton’s incorporation into the band as a comedic counterpoint to Day, as well as his dancing and backup vocals, which were previously underappreciated. The next year, when Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis were unable to perform at a performance in San Antonio, Prince assigned Benton the job of pretending to fill in for Lewis on stage with his bass unplugged while Prince supplied the bass line behind. After the tour, Jam and Lewis were both dismissed from their jobs. Benton featured in the 1984 film Purple Rain with the rest of The Time, in which he played the role of Morris Day’s bodyguard and personal valet.

However, despite the fact that The Time was quickly disbanded when Day embarked on a solo career, Prince kept Benton, together with Jellybean Johnson and Paul Peterson, for the brief but fruitful endeavour The Family. On December 13, 2003, Benton returned with The Family for a single charity concert in which he was joined by other performers that had previously performed with Prince.
