John Bettis (born October 24, 1946) is an American lyricist who has penned the lyrics to numerous well-known hit songs throughout the course of his career. In 2011, John was honoured into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, marking his first two inductions into either hall. Originally, he was a member of the band Spectrum, which also included Richard and Karen Carpenter, among others. He penned the lyrics for “Top of the World,” a big success for both Lynn Anderson and The Carpenters that became a staple in their repertoire. 

Several additional Carpenters successes were written by him, including “Only Yesterday,” “Goodbye to Love,” and “Yesterday Once More.” He went on to write hit songs for other artists, including Madonna (“Crazy for You”), Michael Jackson (“Human Nature”), The Pointer Sisters (“Slow Hand”), Diana Ross (“When You Tell Me That You Love Me”), Jennifer Warnes (“Nights Are Forever”), George Strait (“Heartland”), Ronnie Milsap (“Only One Love in My Life”), and Barbara Mandrell (“Only One Love in My Life”) (“One of a Kind Pair of Fools”). Bettis also co-wrote “One Moment in Time,” the 1988 Summer Olympics anthem sung by Whitney Houston, as well as the theme song of the 1980s series Growing Pains, “As Long as We’ve Got Each Other.” Bettis is best known for co-writing the 1988 Summer Olympics anthem “One Moment in Time.” 

He was born in Long Beach, California, the son of Wayne Douglas Bettis and Nellie Jane (House) Bettis, and graduated from San Pedro High School in 1964 with the class of that year. After school, he was an active member of the choir and would go to plays in the evenings with a group of theatre students. Following graduation, he went on to study at California State University. In the theatre, John has written lyrics for the musicals Lunch (tour 1994), Svengali (1992), The Last Session (Best Musical Score 1998, L.A. Drama Critics Award), Say Goodnight (1999), Pure Country (2008), and most recently Josephine (tour 2017). (2011). As of mid-2008, Bettis has over 800 song credits listed in the ASCAP database, according to the organisation. He now resides in Nashville, Tennessee with his wife Mary and their two sons Wyatt and Conway, as well as his mother, Mary Bettis.
