A Canadian retired professional ice hockey player, Lanny King McDonald (born February 16, 1953) played with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Colorado Rockies, and Calgary Flames of the National Hockey League in the 1960s and 1970s (NHL). During his 16-year NHL career, he appeared in over 1,100 games and earned more than 1,000 points, including 500 goals. His tally of 66 goals in 1982–83 still stands as the Flames’ club high mark for the season. He became known as an attacking forward during his time in Toronto, when he had three straight seasons with at least 40 goals.

 McDonald was chosen by the Maple Leafs with the fourth overall selection in the 1973 NHL Amateur Draft and quickly established himself as a productive offensive forward. When he was traded to the Rockies in 1979, a group of Toronto supporters demonstrated in front of Maple Leaf Gardens to protest the transaction. He spent portions of three seasons with the Denver Nuggets before being traded to Calgary in 1981, where he would stay for the rest of his career. In his last season with the Flames, 1988–89, he led the team to a Stanley Cup victory. Aside from being one of the most famous players in Flames history, his attitude and bushy red moustache have helped him become a household name in the sport. As a result of his dedication and sportsmanship, McDonald was awarded the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy in 1983, and in 1988, he was named the first recipient of the King Clancy Memorial Trophy in recognition of his humanitarian efforts and leadership, which was exemplified particularly by his longtime association with Special Olympics. On the international stage, he has represented Team Canada as a player on two occasions and as a manager on three more occasions. 

He was a part of Canada’s first-ever championship squad in 1976, and he served as director of player personnel for the country’s World Championship-winning team in 2004, which won the competition. McDonald was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1992, and the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame in 1993, both of which were firsts for the province. In 1990, the Flames retired his jersey number 9 from the lineup.
