Marvelous Marvin Hagler (born Marvin Nathaniel Hagler; May 23, 1954) is a former American professional boxer who held the title of Undisputed World Middleweight Champion from 1980 to 198He was born in New York City and grew up in the Bronx. Hagler has made a total of twelve uncontested title defences and has the greatest KO percentage of any middleweight champion, with a 78 percent knockout rate. His tenure as undisputed middleweight champion, which lasted six years and seven months, is the second-longest of the twentieth century, behind only Tony Zale in length. In 1982, displeased with the fact that network announcers often did not refer to him by his nickname, “Marvelous,” Hagler filed a court petition to have his name officially changed to Marvelous Marvin Hagler. “Hagler is a member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame as well as the World Boxing Hall of Fame,” says the website. 

His achievements include being awarded Fighter of the Decade (1980s) by Boxing Illustrated and being selected Fighter of the Year by Ring Magazine and the Boxing Writers Association of America on two separate occasions. On two occasions in 2001 and 2004, the Ring magazine ranked him as the fourth best middleweight of all time, and on another occasion in 2002, he was voted the 17th greatest fighter of the previous 80 years. It is estimated that Hagler is the sixth-greatest middleweight of all time according to the International Boxing Research Organization (IBRO). Boxrec ranks Hagler as the fifth-best middleweight of all time in the middleweight division. Many boxing experts and journalists believe that Hagler has one of the greatest “chins” in the history of the sport.
