Thierry Guetta is a filmmaker and a street artist. According to the Banksy-directed film Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010), Guetta started out as a clothing store owner and amateur videographer who was first introduced to street art by his cousin, street artist Invader, and who filmed street artists throughout the 2000s before “evolving” into an artist in his own right in a matter of weeks after an off-hand suggestion from Banksy. Guetta usually does not have much direct participation in the creation of the artwork credited to him; instead, he sends ideas to his creative team, which consists mostly of graphic designers. Banksy, uses well-known creative and historic pictures, many of which are copyrighted, and alters them in minor but important ways. A lot of reviewers have noted how closely his works resemble Banksy’s styles and ideas, leading some to believe that Guetta is a planned joke by Banksy, who may have produced the works himself. However, Banksy claims on his official website that Exit Through the Gift Shop is genuine and that Guetta is not a prankster. Due to a combination of an overheated and inflated street art market and – according to Banksy and Shepard Fairey as shown in Exit – his abuse of endorsements from Banksy and Fairey, his work sold for five-figure amounts at his self-financed first exhibit Life is Beautiful. On June 18, 2008, the show opened in Los Angeles, California, to great acclaim and critical acclaim.
