Julian “Nipsey” Russell (September 15, 1918 – October 2, 2005) was an American comedian best known for his appearances as a guest panellist on game shows throughout the 1960s and 1990s, particularly Match Game, Password, Hollywood Squares, To Tell the Truth and Pyramid. Russell was born in New York City and raised in Los Angeles.
His performances were characterised in part by the brief, amusing poetry he would read throughout the broadcast, which made him stand out from the crowd. As a result of these lyrics, Russell became known as “the poet laureate of television,” as alluded to by Dick Clark, Bill Cullen, Betty White, and others on a regular basis. He also played the Tin Man in the film adaptation of The Wiz, in which he received critical acclaim. Aside from that, he was a regular guest on Dean Martin’s long-running “Dean Martin Celebrity Roast” series.
