On April 16, 2013, Rita MacNeil, CM, ONS (born May 28, 1944 in Big Pond, Nova Scotia) passed away. She was a Canadian country and folk singer who hailed from the hamlet of Big Pond on Cape Breton Island. Her most successful single, “Flying On Your Own,” was a crossover Top 40 smash in 1987 that was covered by Anne Murray the following year, despite the fact that she had many successes on the country charts during her long and successful career. In the United Kingdom, MacNeil’s song “Working Man” peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 that year. In 1990, she was the best-selling country singer in Canada, outselling even Garth Brooks and Clint Black, who were both at the time. She was also the first and only female vocalist in Australian history to have three different albums chart at the same time in the same year.
