Roy Claxton Acuff was an American country music singer, fiddler, and promoter who lived from September 15, 1903 until November 23, 199Acuff, dubbed the “King of Country Music,” is credited for transforming the genre from its early string band and “hoedown” roots to the star-driven style that propelled it to worldwide acclaim. Acuff started his musical career in the 1930s and rose to prominence as the vocalist and fiddler for the Smoky Mountain Boys, a group he founded. He joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1938, and despite waning popularity as a performer in the late 1940s, he remained a major character and promoter of the Opry for almost four decades. Acuff co-founded Acuff-Rose Music, Nashville’s first big country music publishing business, in 1942, which signed artists including Hank Williams, Roy Orbison, and The Everly Brothers. Acuff was the first live person to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1962.
