Originally from Mexico, Sergio Zyman (born July 30, 1945) is a marketing executive most known for his role in the disastrous introduction of Coca-New Cola’s Coke, which is widely considered as one of the biggest marketing disasters of all time. According to a Fortune Magazine cover storey published on May 1, 1995, the introduction of New Coke was the greatest marketing mistake since the introduction of Ford’s Edsel. New Coke was a taste that was reformulated from the original Coca-Cola flavouring. It took just 77 days after widespread customer resistance for the original taste to be restored on the market. Zyman, then director of U.S. marketing, was fresh off his tremendously successful launch of diet Coke when he was given day-to-day responsibility for top-secret Project Kansas in 1984, according to the Fortune Magazine cover storey. In order to reverse its 20-year market share loss against Pepsi, the passionate Mexican urged that Coca-Cola (or Co-Coola, as he pronounces it) must take aggressive action. This April marks a decade since Coca-Cola replaced the 98-year-old Coke with a better tasting cola, labelled it “New Coke,” and broadcasted the news, which is precisely what the corporation did one decade ago this month. In the end, Zyman and his team failed to offer the alternative of keeping vintage Coke on the market, which some have blamed on vanity on their part. Zyman’s professional background includes positions with Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, and Procter & Gamble, as well as his own company, Zyman Group.
