Melkert, known professionally as Adrianus Petrus Wilhelmus “Ad” Melkert (Dutch: [??t?m?lk?rt] (13px listen); born February 12, 1956) is a Dutch politician and member of the Labour Party (PvdA). His time in the Dutch Parliament began on June 3, 1986, and ended on August 22, 1994, when he was appointed Minister of Social Affairs and Employment in the Cabinet Kok I, after the 1994 general election in the Netherlands. On his own initiative, after the 1998 Dutch general election, he was not included in Kok II, the government formed to oversee the transition from Wim Kok as leader of the Labour Party to a new government.
He wanted to devote his time and energy to his campaign to succeed Wim Kok as leader of the Labour Party. Melkert was re-elected as a member of the House of Representatives on July 13, 1998, and he was appointed Parliamentary leader of the Labour Party in the House of Representatives on July 13, 1998, and he was presumed to be the de facto next Party leader of the Labour Party in all but name on that date. At the Dutch general election in 2002, he was elected the official Party leader of the Labour Party on December 15, 2001, and was designated as the lijsttrekker (top contender) for the first time. In the early phases of the campaign, Melkert and Hans Dijkstal were considered the front-runners to become the next Prime Minister.
However, the surprise emergence of Pim Fortuyn of Livable Netherlands (LN) and subsequently the Pim Fortuyn List (LPF) caused the polls to shift dramatically. When it came to the country’s difficulties, Fortuyn criticised the Purple cabinets (in which both Melkert and Dijkstal served as ministers) and painted Melkert and Dijkstal as bureaucrats who were out of touch with their constituents’ concerns, a charge that was echoed by Melkert and Dijkstal. During the election, Fortuyn accused Melkert of demonising his reputation and personal integrity, which Fortuyn said was untrue.
Fortuyn was slain in Hilversum, the Netherlands, only nine days before the election, after a tense campaign. The Labour Party was defeated in the election by a landslide, losing 23 seats. Melkert was held responsible for the loss in part because of his technical leadership style, which contrasted with that of the more charismatic Fortuyn. Melkert got death threats after Fortuyn was assassinated, prompting him to resign from the national political scene. On May 16, 2002, he resigned from his positions as Party Leader of the Labour Party and Parliamentary Leader of the Labour Party in the House of Representatives, and he resigned from his position as a member of the House of Representatives the following month, on October 17, 200Following his political career in the Netherlands, he went on to work for the World Bank and the United Nations.
