Barbara Kingsolver (born April 8, 1955) is a writer, essayist, and poet from the United States. She was reared in rural Kentucky and spent a short period of time in the Democratic Republic of the Congo during her early infancy. Before she started writing books, Kingsolver obtained bachelor’s and master’s degrees in biology from DePauw University and the University of Arizona, and she worked as a freelance writer. A few of her best-known books include The Poisonwood Bible, which tells the storey of a missionary family in the Democratic Republic of the Congo; and Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, which is a non-fiction description of her family’s efforts to consume only locally grown foods. Human connection with their communities and surroundings is a common theme in her work, which includes themes such as social justice, biodiversity, and the relationship between people and their environments. She has had a book released every year since 1993 that has reached the top of the New York Times Best Seller list. A number of accolades have been bestowed to Kingsolver, including the Richard C. Holbrooke Distinguished Achievement Award 2011, the Orange Prize for Fiction 2010, the National Humanities Medal, and the Dayton Literary Peace Prize in 201Nominations for the PEN/Faulkner Award and the Pulitzer Prize have been made for her work. The Bellwether Prize, founded by Kingsolver in 2000 to encourage “writing of social transformation,” is awarded annually.
