Bob Wills (born James Robert Wills on March 6, 1905, died on May 13, 1975) was an American Western swing pianist, composer, and bandleader who lived from 1905 to 1975. He was widely regarded as the co-founder of Western swing by music experts, and he was affectionately referred to as "the King of Western Swing" (after the death of Spade Cooley who used the moniker "King Of Western Swing" from 1942 to 1969.) Throughout his career, Wills formed several bands and performed on radio stations throughout the South and West, eventually forming the Texas Playboys in 1934 with Wills on fiddle, Tommy Duncan on piano and vocals, rhythm guitarist June Whalin, tenor banjoist Johnnie Lee Wills, and Kermit Whalin, who played steel guitar and bass. The Texas Playboys were a group of fiddle players who played bluegrass music in the South and West. The band began broadcasting frequently on a Tulsa, Oklahoma radio station and extended its lineup to include steel guitarist Leon McAuliffe, pianist Al Stricklin, drummer Smokey Dacus, and a horn section that complemented the band's sound and contributed to its versatility. When it came to arrangements, Wills preferred jazz-inspired melodies, and the band achieved national acclaim in the 1940s with songs such as "Steel Guitar Rag," "New San Antonio Rose," "Smoke on the Water," "Stars And Stripes On Iwo Jima," and "New Spanish Two Step." Wills and the Texas Playboys recorded with a number of different publishers and firms, including Vocalion, Okeh, Columbia, and MGM, and moved about a lot throughout their recording career. Two Top 10 singles in 1950, "Ida Red Likes The Boogie" and "Faded Love," marked the end of his Top 10 run and the beginning of his decade-long hiatus. Despite his ill health and precarious financial situation during the 1950s, he continued to play on a regular basis despite the decrease in popularity of his earlier songs as rock & roll took over the music scene. Wills had a heart attack in 1962 and another the following year, which caused him to dissolve the Playboys, despite the fact that Wills continued to play as a solo artist. Wills was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1968, and the Texas State Legislature recognised him for his contributions to American music the same year. An award from the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers, which was held in Nashville in 1972, was received by Wills. In 1973, he was in the middle of making an album with admirer Merle Haggard when he had a stroke that rendered him unconscious until his death in 1975. Wills and the Texas Playboys were among the first musicians to be elected into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1999.
