Brett Haber is a sportscaster from the United States. The Tennis Channel, as well as many other national and regional sports channels, use his commentary and hosting skills to broadcast matches. Haber is also the editor-at-large and sports editor for the Washingtonian magazine, which he founded. When Haber announced his departure from his position as sports director of WUSA-TV, the CBS station in Washington, D.C., where he had been since 2004, many people were surprised.
Haber was a news anchor for ESPN’s main news show SportsCenter throughout the mid-1990s and early 2000s. In addition to his work at WUSA-TV and ESPN, Haber has worked in the sports departments of WNNE-TV (White River Junction, Vermont), WCAX-TV (Burlington, Vermont), WCPO-TV (Cincinnati), WTTG-TV (Washington, DC), and WCBS-TV (New York City). Haber received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Vermont (New York). In 2000, Haber took over as sports director of WCBS from the renowned sportscaster Warner Wolf, who had retired. 2003 marked Haber’s debut into the world of non-sports radio, when he took over as morning drive host on Washington, D.C.’s hot adult contemporary station Z-104 (WWZZ-FM). Haber departed WWZZ in 2004 to pursue a full-time career in television. Haber is the voice of the Tennis Channel, where he announces grand slam, ATP World Circuit, and WTA events, as well as Davis Cup, Fed Cup, and all tournaments on the Champions Series, a senior tour that includes Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, and other famous players over the age of thirty. A year later, Haber was hired by Tennis Channel to serve as the main play-by-play commentator for their 3D coverage of the French Open in Paris. He was also a member of the Tennis Channel broadcast crew for the 2011 U.S. Open, where he called live matches as well as the encore telecasts of all of the men’s and women’s quarterfinals and finals throughout the tournament. With the start of the 2008 season, Haber began serving as one of the emcees for the annual induction weekend events at the International Tennis Hall of Fame and Museum in Newport, Rhode Island.
As an aside from tennis, Haber has worked on a number of other broadcasts and sidelines, including pre-season football for the New York Jets, the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, University Football League (UFL), Professional Bull Riders (PBR), and The Running of the Bulls (in Pamplona, Spain). Previously, he served as an infrequent presenter of the Fidelity Investments CBS SportsDesk, which could be viewed during weekends of CBS network sports programming, and he stepped in for studio host Ernie Johnson for TNT’s coverage of the NBA Finals. Haber began writing sports columns for USA Today in 2009, and he has been there ever since. He was a regular contributor to the “Keeping Score” column, which ran on page 3 of the paper’s sports section and was written by a rotating group of writers. His debut column ran on September 2, 2009, in the New York Times. When Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder launched a libel lawsuit against the Washington City Paper, Haber’s on-air commentary on the case garnered significant notice in the 2011 calendar year. “Snyder’s financial bullying, irresponsible accusations of anti-Semitism, and wanton distortion of the facts,” said Haber, who had the full backing of WUSA and parent company Gannett in his passionate defence of the newspaper’s First Amendment rights. Haber’s campaign assisted in igniting a broad uproar against Snyder’s efforts to influence both the judicial system and the media – an outcry that resulted in the abolition of Snyder’s practise.
