David “Cement” Gillespie (born March 22, 1964 in Narromine, New South Wales) is a former professional rugby league player from Australia who played in the 1980s and 1990s. He was a solid forward who represented Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, Western Suburbs Magpies, Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles, New South Wales, and Australia. He is now a defensive coach with both the Roosters and Sharks, and is Ricky Stuart’s personal buddy. Following the 1980 championship, Gillespie joined Canterbury’s rebuilding effort and quickly established himself as a success with his strong tackling, earning him the nickname “Cement.” After scoring a rare try in their strong 26-nil victory over Parramatta in the preliminary final, his defence was crucial to Canterbury’s retention of the
championship against a highly favoured St. George side in 198Despite not having played for New South Wales, Gillespie was picked to tour with the Kangaroos the following year, but his season was cut short by a terrible work accident that almost severed his finger. Then, in 1987, Gillespie lost almost a third of his season due to two bans (one of which he was sent out on the opening tackle of a match against Balmain, which was uncommon). During the 1987–88 Rugby Football League season, he played for Hunslet in England. When he returned to Australia in 1988, “Cement” improved and was selected for the World Cup final against New Zealand, but in 1989, he was so poor that he was temporarily demoted to reserve grade before a four-week ban for a reckless tackle essentially ruined his season. Gillespie eventually established himself as a writer in 1990.
