De La Soul is an American hip hop group that was established in 1987 on the Long Island, New York, by three brothers. Aesthetically, the band is most recognised for its diverse sampling and odd lyrics, as well as for their contributions to the development of the jazz rap and alternative hip hop subgenres. Kelvin Mercer (Posdnuos, Mercenary, Plug Wonder Why, Plug One), David Jude Jolicoeur (Trugoy the Dove, Dave, Plug Two), and Vincent Mason (Trugoy the Dove, Dave, Plug Two) are the members (P.A. Pasemaster Mase, Maseo, Plug Three, Baby Huey). The three members of Plug Tunin’ founded the group while still in high school, and a demo tape of the song “Plug Tunin'” attracted the attention of producer Prince Paul. Prince Paul was also known to as Plug Four at various points in his career.
The names of the Plugs are said to have been derived from the numbers that were assigned to each bandmate’s microphone on the soundboard. Posdnuos was always connected into the first socket, Trugoy was always hooked into the second plug, and so on. The band’s first album, 3 Feet High and Rising, is widely regarded as a hip hop classic due to its humorous wordplay, creative sampling, and hilarious skits, among other elements. It is also the band’s most commercially successful album to date, with their following albums selling progressively less, while getting great acclaim from reviewers, as the years went by.
The fact that 3 Feet High and Rising was named Album of the Year by NME, a publication more renowned for its taste in guitar-based music, was a testament to the album’s cross-over popularity. De La Soul has had an impact on a slew of other hip hop acts, including Camp Lo, The Black Eyed Peas, and Digable Planets, among others. Their influence on the early phases of rapper/actor Mos Def’s career is likewise well-documented. They also form an integral component of the Spitkicker collective. After the Jungle Brothers, they are the group with the second-longest history of the Native Tongues Posse. When the trio collaborated with Gorillaz on the song “Feel Good Inc.” in 2006, they received a Grammy nomination.
