In the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Elizabeth Eaton is the fourth Presiding Bishop (and the first female Presiding Bishop) (ELCA). Presiding Bishop Mark Hanson was re-elected as Presiding Bishop on Wednesday, August 14, 2013, after receiving 287 votes on the fifth ballot.
She was chosen on the fifth ballot with 600 votes by the assembly on that day. Rockefeller Chapel in Hyde Park, New York, hosted her installation as presiding bishop on October 5, 201(Chicago, IL). It should be noted that Chicago also serves as the headquarters of the ELCA. It was on November 1, 2013, that she started her term as presiding bishop of the ELCA.
Eaton has served as Bishop of the Northeastern Ohio Synod (NEOS) from her installation on February 7, 2007 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Cleveland, Ohio, prior to her election as president of the board of directors (Akron, OH). In his earlier ministry, Bishop Eaton served congregations in the state of Ohio.
Following a vocation to serve All Saints Lutheran Church (Worthington, OH) and a one-year stint as temporary pastor at Good Hope Lutheran Church, Eaton received his ordination in 198(Youngstown, OH). At the time of her appointment, she was working as pastor at Messiah Lutheran Church in Ashtabula, Ohio. She was the first woman to be elected as bishop of the Northeastern Ohio Synod.
She received a Bachelor of Arts in music instruction from the College of Wooster in 1977, and then went on to Harvard Divinity School, where she received a Master of Divinity degree in 198Taken together, they have two adult daughters: Rebeckah and Susannah. Eaton is married to Rev.
Conrad Selnick, an Episcopal priest who serves as vice president of the Bexley Seabury Seminary Federation (Chicago, Illinois), and the couple has two children: Rebeckah and Susannah.
