Joe Feeney (August 15, 1931 – April 16, 2008) was an American tenor vocalist who sang on the television show The Lawrence Welk Show. Feeney, who was born to an Irish-American family in Grand Island, Nebraska, began singing in his hometown’s church choir as a boy soprano, and after high school, he earned a guest appearance on the programme Youth Opportunity Hour. Mary, his mother, backed him up in all he did. While pursuing his studies at the University of Nebraska, he competed in numerous singing competitions, winning a place on Arlene Francis’ Talent Patrol show. The station manager sent tapes of Feeney’s voice to the Welk headquarters in Santa Monica, California, where
Lawrence Welk offered him a position on his programme in 1956, when he was working at radio station WOW in Omaha. He went to Magnolia High School in West Virginia as well. Feeney was the main Irish tenor on the Welk show from 1957 until 1982, when it ceased production. Danny Boy, Galway Bay, Sweet Leilani, and the Mario Lanza classic Be My Love were among his favourite musical performances with the Welk crowd. He has also sung for five US presidents and three times at Carnegie Hall; in 1975, he sang for Pope Paul VI during the canonization of Mother Seton, America’s first native-born saint. Feeney and his first wife, Georgia Lee Gryva, had eleven children; one of his sons, Chris, is a renowned opera singer.
