He was born on June 15, 1889, in New York City, and died on May 7, 1960, in Los Angeles. John Reed Kilpatrick was an American athlete, soldier, and sports businessman. He is a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame as well as the College Football Hall of Fame, among other honours. Born to a Canadian mother and an American father, Kilpatrick grew up in New York City and went on to get his bachelor’s degree from Yale University. He participated in football as well as track and field, and he was widely regarded as one of the best players in the country at the time. Soon after graduation, he began working as a waiter in New York City before being conscripted into the United States Army during World War I.
During his military career, he received a number of awards, including the Distinguished Service Medal. Immediately after the war, he began a successful business career in New York, which eventually led to his appointment as president of the Madison Square Garden Corporation. Kilpatrick was the general manager of Madison Square Garden for more than twenty-five years, during which time he was also in charge of the New York Rangers NHL team from 1934 to 1960. During his tenure as coach of the Rangers, the team won the Stanley Cup in 1940. Kilpatrick also brought a variety of other professional events to Madison Square Garden, including ice shows and, with the help of Ned Irish, a former college and professional basketball player, basketball tournaments and exhibitions.
In 1936, he was chosen to the position of NHL Governor. Kilpatrick was recalled to active military service in June 1942 to participate in World War II, and he was elevated to the rank of brigadier general. He left the service in 1949 and went on to play for the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden. Following his retirement from the NHL, Kilpatrick continued to make contributions to the sport by helping to create the National Hockey League Pension Society in 194In 1960, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame after his death, and in 1968, he was awarded the Lester Patrick Trophy for his exceptional contributions to the sport in the United States of America.
