Jonas Edward Salk (/s??lk/) was an American medical researcher and virologist who lived from October 28, 1914, until June 23, 199He was the first to discover and create an inactivated polio vaccine. He was born to Jewish parents in New York City. His parents were eager to see their children thrive, despite their lack of formal schooling. Salk distinguished apart among his classmates at New York University School of Medicine, not just because of his academic achievements, but also because he chose to pursue medical research rather than becoming a practising physician.

Polio was considered the most terrifying public health issue in the postwar United States until 1957, when the Salk vaccine was released. Epidemics were becoming more and more deadly each year. The pandemic of 1952 was the deadliest in the country’s history. There were 3,145 deaths and 21,269 individuals left paralysed as a result of the almost 58,000 cases recorded that year, with the majority of the casualties being youngsters. The trial included about 1,800,000 schoolchildren. Salk was lauded as a “wonder worker” after the vaccine’s effectiveness was announced on April 12, 1955, and the day “nearly became a national holiday.” Without regard for personal gain, his only goal had been to create a safe and effective vaccination as quickly as feasible. Salk responded in a televised appearance when asked who held the vaccine patent: 

“There is no such thing as a patent. Is it possible to patent the sun?” He established the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California, in 1960, which is now a medical and scientific research institution.
