Michael “Mike” Sheahan (born 1947) is a journalist who focuses on Australian rules football. He served as the Herald Sun’s main football writer and assistant sports editor for eighteen years, but stepped down at the end of 2011; nevertheless, he will continue to write special pieces for the publication, including his renowned annual “Top 50.” He’s also a commentator on Fox Footy’s On the Couch and the VFL’s former media director (now AFL). On Saturday afternoons, he joins Brian Taylor, Matthew Richardson, Matthew Lloyd, and Leigh Matthews in the 3AW football pre-match conversation. In addition, he hosts Open Mike, a weekly interview show on Fox Footy. Sheahan went to Werribee High School and began his career as a writer with the Werribee Banner. He then went on to work for Melbourne’s The Age newspaper before going on to The Herald and later the Herald Sun, where he has been a long-time sports journalist.
His strong opinions have attracted some criticism, but he has established himself as one of Australia’s most famous journalists, and his annual Mike Sheahan’s Top 50 is usually a heated topic of discussion. Sheahan has also been on Fox Sports’ On The Couch alongside Brownlow Medalist Gerard Healy and Sydney Swans championship coach Paul Roos, and has worked with the Seven Network on their late-night football discussion programme, Talking Footy. He is the cousin of Paul Sheahan, a former Test cricketer.
