Monty Clift (born October 17, 1920 in New York City, died July 23, 1966 in Los Angeles) was an American actor who appeared in films and on stage. In his obituary in the New York Times, Clift was praised for his depiction of “moody, sensitive young men.” He was often cast as outsiders and “victim-heroes,” as in George Stevens’s A Place in the Sun, Alfred Hitchcock’s I Confess, Fred Zinnemann’s From Here to Eternity, and Edward Dmytryk’s The Young Lions, when he portrayed a Jewish GI who is harassed by antisemites. After surviving an automobile accident in 1956 that left him with a partly paralysed face and a changed appearance, Clift developed an addiction to alcohol and prescription medications, which resulted in his unpredictable conduct both on and off screen. His acting career was still going well, with roles like “the wild, drunken, mother-fixated rodeo performer” in John Huston’s film The Misfits and the title character in Huston’s film Freud: The Secret Passion among his many credits. During his performance as Rudolph Peterson, a victim of Nazi-ordered sterilisation in the Stanley Kramer film Judgment at Nuremberg, Clift was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Clift was later nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He was nominated for four Academy Awards throughout his career, three for Best Actor and one for Best Supporting Actor. He won the Best Actor award in the same year.
