In Japan, Nobuo Uematsu (Uematsu Nobuo) (born March 21, 1959) is a video game composer who is most well-known for composing the bulk of the Final Fantasy video game series. He is widely regarded as one of the most well-known and well-respected composers in the video game industry. Uematsu, a self-taught musician, started playing the piano when he was eleven or twelve years old, with Elton John serving as his most significant influence at the time. 

In 1986, Uematsu joined Square (later Square Enix), where he met Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of the Final Fantasy series. They have collaborated on a number of video game titles, the most notable of which being the Final Fantasy series of games. His tenure at Square Enix spanned almost two decades, and he left the business in 2004 to start his own company named Smile Please, as well as the music production company Dog Ear Records. Since then, he has worked as a freelance composer, mainly on video games produced by Square Enix and Sakaguchi’s development company Mistwalker. 

Uematsu’s game scores have been published as soundtracks and orchestrated albums, as well as on CD. Final Fantasy concerts have included performances of music from his video game creations. On many of these events, he has collaborated with Grammy Award-winning conductor Arnie Roth, who has received several accolades. From 2002 until 2010, he was a member of The Black Mages, a rock band that included his colleagues Kenichiro Fukui and Tsuyoshi Sekito, in which he played electronic organ and other keyboard instruments. The band performed orchestrated rock renditions of Final Fantasy tunes by Nobuo Uematsu on stage. Since then, he has been on stage with the band Earthbound Papas.
