Paolo Di Canio (born July 9, 1968) is a former professional footballer from Italy. Before going into managing, he made over 500 league games and scored over a hundred goals throughout his playing career. He was mainly a striker throughout his playing days, although he could also play as an offensive midfielder. Di Canio started his career in the Italian Serie A, where he played for Lazio, Juventus, Napoli, and A.C. Milan, before joining Celtic for a short while. After that, he played in the English Premier League for seven years with Sheffield Wednesday, West Ham United, and Charlton Athletic. In March 2000, while with West Ham, he scored one of the best goals in Premier League history against Wimbledon F.C. Before retiring in 2008, he returned to Italy in 2004 and played for Lazio and Cisco Roma. He was a member of the Italian under-21 squad but never had a chance to play for the senior team. Di Canio was awarded SPFA Players’ Player of the Year in 1997 and West Ham’s Player of the Season in 2000, among his many individual honours as a player. His career, however, was marred by controversy: in 1998, he got an eleven-match suspension for assaulting a referee, and he garnered bad press for his self-proclaimed fascist sympathies. In 2011, Di Canio made his managerial debut in England with Swindon Town, leading them to promotion to League One in his first full season. At the end of March 2013, he was named Sunderland manager. His contentious hiring lasted 13 games until he was fired on September 22nd, despite Sunderland winning just three games throughout his tenure.
