Rick Green (born November 4, 1953) is a Canadian comedian, humorist, and writer who is best known for his stand-up routines. He graduated with honours from the University of Waterloo with a Bachelor of Science degree. He was a presenter at the Ontario Science Centre from 1975 to 1979, where he spent the most of his time. He was a founding member of the Toronto-based comedic group The Frantics in 1979. On their CBC Radio programme Frantic Times and their short-lived television series Four on the Floor, they were heard talking about their lives. On The Red Green Show, he may be seen in the role of Bill. It was as a Demonstrator at the Ontario Science Centre that he got his first job. In addition to delivering presentations on topics such as lasers, electricity, cryogenics, and other scientific topics, Rick created a number of unique programmes, science plays, and exhibitions that blended knowledge, humour, and entertainment. In 1979, he embarked on a full-time career in show business as a member of the comic group The Frantics. After that, they produced and performed hundreds of live performances and 150 radio programmes over the course of eight years. They also released numerous albums, a half dozen successful stage plays, and the pioneering television series Four On The Floor. In 2003, the Frantics came out of retirement to play on stage and on television for the first time in almost a decade. Green rose to fame as 'Commander Rick,' the creator and presenter of the speculative fiction news magazine series Prisoners of Gravity, which premiered on TVO in 1989. Rick also collaborated with Steve Smith on the creation of The Red Green Show, which aired on NBC. He created the programme and appeared in it for 11 seasons, as the clumsy outdoorsman Bill. The Red Green Show has spawned many spin-offs, including books (which Rick co-wrote and drew), DVDs, CDs, and other media. It continues to be the longest-running comedy series in Canada. History Bites was founded by Green in 1999. The Canadian Screenwriters Association has nominated The Separatists for a Canadian Screenwriters Award. Rick was awarded "Person of the Year" by the Ontario History Teachers Association in 2004. He has also received many honours and awards during his career. In 2003, as a result of the popularity of History Bites, Green was asked to join the advisory board of the Histori.ca foundation, which he did. Green was diagnosed with attention deficit disorder when one of his children was discovered to be suffering from the condition. Green produced and filmed the documentary ADD & Loving it?! about people with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in 2009. The film was released in 2009. A Silver Award from the New York Festivals was given to the film, which also garnered Rick the CAMH Foundation Transforming Lives Award for 2009. The film also included fellow comedian Patrick McKenna. CHADD and ADD, the two most influential ADHD advocacy organisations in the United States, have both supported the film, something they have never done before with any book, video, or programme before now. Green is presently working on a book with Dr. Umesh Jain of CAMH titled, ADD Stole My Car Keys, which will be published in the fall of 2018. His efforts have received many accolades, including Gemini Awards, ACTRA Awards, New York Festival Awards, and a number of educational honours. Jim Carrey, Gordon Pinsent, David Steinberg, Graham Chapman, Colin Mochrie, Graham Greene, Eric Stoltz, and Martin Short have all performed his work, as have other well-known performers. In 2004, he wrote the HBO programme Sexual Intelligence, starring Kim Cattrall. Green was named one of the top 50 alumni of the University of Waterloo for the last 50 years at a ceremony held in September 2007 at the university.
