Samuel George “Sammy” Davis, Jr. was an American performer who lived from December 8, 1925 until May 16, 1990. He was most known for his impersonations of actresses, musicians, and other celebrities. He was primarily a dancer and vocalist, but he also worked as a theatre and film actor, musician, and impressionist. Davis started his vaudeville career at the age of three, touring nationwide with his father and Will Mastin as the Will Mastin Trio. Davis rejoined the group after serving in the military.
Following a nightclub performance at Ciro’s following the 1951 Academy Awards, Davis became an instant celebrity. He became a recording artist with the group. He lost his left eye in a car accident in 1954, and he converted to Judaism a few years later. Davis started his cinematic career as a youngster in 193In 1960, he starred in Ocean’s 11, the first Rat Pack film. Davis returned to the stage in 1964’s Golden Boy, and in 1966 had his own TV variety programme, The Sammy Davis Jr. Show, after a major performance on Broadway in 1956’s Mr Wonderful. Davis’s career stalled in the late 1960s, but in 1972, he scored a success with “The Candy Man” and rose to fame in Las Vegas, giving him the moniker “Mister Show Business.” Davis was a major financial supporter of the Civil Rights movement and was a victim of prejudice throughout his life as an African-American. Davis had a tumultuous connection with the African-American community, and he received backlash in 1972 by physically hugging President Richard M. Nixon. He was asked what his handicap was one day on the golf course alongside Jack Benny. He inquired, “Handicap?” “Talk about a handicap – I’m a one-eyed Negro Jew,” he would say again.
