The Undertones were founded in 1975 in Derry, Northern Ireland, as a punk rock/new wave band. Feargal Sharkey (vocals), John O’Neill (rhythm guitar, vocals), Damian O’Neill (lead guitar, vocals), Michael Bradley (bass, vocals), and Billy Doherty (drums, vocals) were the members of the Undertones from 1975 until 198(drums). Although punk rock and new wave influenced most of the early Undertones work, the band also added elements of rock, glam rock, and post-punk into material produced after 1979, before claiming soul and Motown as influences for material published on their last album. Between 1978 and 1983, the Undertones produced thirteen singles and four studio albums until
Sharkey announced his departure in May 1983, claiming artistic disagreements as the cause for the breakup. Despite the political context in which the band found itself, the overwhelming bulk (though not all) of the songs they published centred on themes such as puberty, adolescent angst, and heartache rather than The Troubles. Because of the instrumentation, guitarists John and Damian O’Neill “mated catchy guitar hooks to 1960s garage, 1970s glam rock, and Feargal Sharkey’s trademark vocal quaver,” according to AllMusic. The Undertones reunited in 1999, with Paul McLoone replacing Feargal Sharkey as lead vocalist. The Undertones are the most well-known band to have come out of Derry.
