In addition to lead vocalist Sharon White, the Whites are comprised of her sister Cheryl (born 1955) and their father Buck White, who is also a country music vocal group (born 1930). The band had a number of top 40 songs in the 1980s, including "You Put The Blue In Me", "Hangin' Around", "Give Me Back That Old Familiar Feeling", "Pins And Needles," "If It Ain's Love (Let's Leave It Alone)," "Hometown Gossip," and "When The New Wears Off Of Our Love." Sharon White married Ricky Skaggs in August 1981, a musician who had previously appeared on many of the Whites' early albums. "Love Can't Ever Get Better Than This," a successful song written by the couple, was published in 1987. In 1991, the Whites collaborated with producers Randall Franks and Alan Autry on the Christmas Time's A Comin' album for the In The Heat Of The Night television series, singing on the track "Let's Live Everyday Like It Was Christmas" (Sonlite/MGM/UA) and performing on the track "Let's Live Everyday Like It Was Christmas."

As of 2007, the Whites are frequent performers on the Grand Ole Opry show in Nashville, Tennessee, which is broadcast live on the internet. "Salt of the Earth," their collaboration album with Ricky Skaggs, was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2008 for Best Southern/Country/Bluegrass Album. The Whites' song "Keep on the Sunny Side" may be heard on the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack, which was composed by John Carpenter. They also feature in the documentary Down from the Mountain, which is based on a performance performed by the musicians who composed the soundtrack. The Whites were inducted into the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame on Saturday, August 16, 2008, in Carthage, Texas, in a ceremony that was broadcast live on the internet. They were inducted into the Hall of Fame with Buck Owens and Mickey Newbury. Rosana White, commonly known as Rosie, is the third of the four White sisters and performs on the Grand Ole Opry with her three sisters, Buck, Sharon, and Cheryl. "The Violet and the Rose," a Mel Tillis favourite, is performed sometimes by her in high harmony and occasionally as a solo performance.
