David Salle (born 1952) is an American painter, printmaker, and stage designer who is credited with helping to define postmodern sensibility via his work. Salle was born in the Oklahoma city of Norman. The California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, California, awarded him a BFA and an MFA in painting, respectively, where he studied under John Baldessari. During the early 1980s, Salle’s work was first brought to the public’s notice in New York. His paintings and prints are composed of what seem to be randomly juxtaposed pictures, or images that have been layered on top of one another using clumsy methods that he has consciously used. In a 2005 lecture, Salle noted, “When I first arrived in New York in the 1970s, it was normal practise not to expect to be able to support one’s family by one’s work.” I knew nothing about art galleries or the commercial side of the art industry when I first started out. It everything looked to be a long way away. When people began to take notice of my work, it looked so implausible that it didn’t appear quite as extraordinary as it really was. I created my work for a tiny audience of friends, largely other artists, and that has not altered much over the years. However, holding exhibitions is a good method to assess whether the art connects with anybody else as well. Having that reaction, something that comes back to you as a result of how your work is viewed by the rest of the world, may be really beneficial to your growth as an artist. However, you must approach it with a fair dose of scepticism… I still spend the most of my days in my studio, working alone, and whatever occurs is a result of that. David Salle has also dabbled in the fields of set and costume design, as well as film direction [1]. Salle was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in theatrical design in 1986, and in 1995, he directed the feature film Search and Destroy, which starred Griffin Dunne and Christopher Walken [2] as the main characters.
