Erno "Emppu" Matti Juhani Vuorinen (born 24 June 1978 in Kitee, Finland) is a Finnish guitarist best known for his work with the symphonic metal band Nightwish, where he was a founding member and occasional composer. A twin brother and three younger sisters make up his family of five children, the eldest of whom is he. He began learning to play guitar as a private study when he was 12 years old and has since performed with a number of bands, including Nightwish, Brother Firetribe, Barilari, Almah, and Altaria, among others. He is mostly known as a rhythm musician, and he is often heard accompanying the keyboard or symphonic sections of Nightwish songs. He does, however, perform lead melodies and solos on occasion. Variations on alternating picking and tapping as well as legato and minor to severe whammy bar usage are common in Vuorinen's soloing approaches; he also utilises sweep picking on occasion, but only in very small doses. His solos are more melodic than those of most metal bands, yet he nevertheless shreds when the situation calls for it (notably in "Nightquest," "The Pharaoh Sails to Orion," "Romanticide," and "Gethsemane" by Nightwish, and also in "Traitor" by Tarot, for which he provided a solo). Emppu's lead guitar work appears on a greater number of Nightwish albums in their first three albums than on their subsequent albums. Since the release of Century Child, Vuorinen has been tuning his studio guitars in D tuning, when before, his guitars were set in standard tuning. His guitars are tuned differently and he uses two of them throughout a musical performance. Vuorinen is also a creative power in Nightwish, having co-written songs with Tuomas Holopainen on every album, with the exception of Angels Fall First and Imaginaerum, from the band's inception in 1991. Vuorinen is the only author of the song Whoever Brings The Night, which appears on Dark Passion Play. Emppu played guitar parts for Almah, a Brazilian metal band, in order to assist his buddy and vocalist Edu Falaschi with his songwriting and performance (also singer of Angra). Because of his duties to Nightwish, Emppu was unable to continue with the band. Additionally, he is a member of Brother Firetribe, an American alternative rock band that, as of 2008, has released two albums worldwide: "False Metal" (which was re-issued as "Break Out") and "Heart Full Of Fire." In the band or among fans, Vuorinen is sometimes referred to as "the short one," "the hobbit," or "the hobbite," due to his diminutive stature of 5'0" (153 cm).
