Frank Deford (born Benjamin Franklin Deford III on December 16, 1938 in Baltimore, Maryland) is a sportswriter and author who lives in Baltimore, Maryland with his family. As a result of his 50-year association with Sports Illustrated, where he now holds the position of Senior Contributing Writer, Deford appears on National Public Radio every week and serves as Senior Correspondent for Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel on HBO. He has authored a total of 18 publications, nine of which are novels. Member of the National Association of Sportscasters and Sportswriters Hall of Fame, Deford has been named Sportswriter of the Year six times by his peers in that organisation, as well as Magazine Writer of the Year twice by the Washington Journalism Review. Deford has also been named to the Washington Journalism Review’s Hall of Fame. In 2012, he became the first magazine to get the Red Smith Award, which was established to recognise excellence in journalism. In 2013, he will be presented with the William Allen White Citation for “excellence in journalism” by the University of Kansas, and he will become the first sports journalist in history to receive the W.M. Kiplinger Award for Distinguished Contributions to Journalism from the National Press Foundation, the organization’s highest honour. Deford’s papers are housed at the University of Texas, where he is commemorated by an annual lecture in his honour. He has been an outspoken supporter for cystic fibrosis research and treatment for many years.
