Jo Ann Greer (born Catherine Joan Greer on April 3, 1927 in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and died on May 24, 2001 in New York City) was a jazz and pop singer who had one of the most distinctive and elegant voices of any of the successful jazz and pop singers in show business, despite having one of the least-known faces.Her professional life stretched almost 50 years, but the two disciplines in which she spent the majority of her time — movie dubbing and band singing — did not always give her the recognition she deserved. After four dissatisfying months, she was hired to replace Lucy Ann Polk as the lead singer for Les Brown’s band in May of 195After a string of hit songs for Coral Records and then Capitol Records, they embarked on an extensive worldwide tour that spanned almost four decades, lasting far into the early 1990s. She was voted “best female band singer” by the readers of Downbeat magazine in 195Greer became increasingly identified with Brown’s classic song “Sentimental Journey,” which he had first recorded with Doris Day and which Greer sang in a different rendition. Rita Hayworth returned to Hollywood in 1952 after the dissolution of her marriage to Prince Aly Khan, and she immediately started production on her “comeback” picture, Affair in Trinidad, which was released the following year. After numerous fruitless efforts to allow Hayworth to try her hand at singing on her own, musical director Morris Stoloff brought in Greer, who was regarded a good vocal match and even shared a little lisp with Hayworth, according to the director. Greer’s vocals on the songs “Trinidad Lady” and “I’ve Been Kissed Before” contributed to the film being a huge box-office success, even outperforming Gilda by more than a million dollars. In addition to Gloria Grahame (in Naked Alibi), Kim Novak (in 5 Against the House), May Wynn (in Jupiter’s Darling (film)), Esther Williams (in Jupiter’s Darling (film)), June Allyson (in The Opposite of Sex (film), and Susan Kohner (in Imitation of Life (1959 film), Greer continued to be in high demand as a dubber, particularly at Columbia Pictures, and went on to do the vocal The Dan Dailey starring Meet Me at the Fair (dubbed for Carole Mathews) and Frankie Laine’s Rainbow ‘Round My Shoulder (dubbing for Charlotte Austin, daughter of entertainer/songwriter Gene Austin) were among the other projects dubbing at Columbia featured. She also appeared with Hayworth in two more of her best hits, Miss Sadie Thompson and Pal Joey, in which she sang for her (film). Greer’s name was not even included on the latter two soundtrack albums, which were issued by Mercury Records and Capitol Records, respectively, in order to protect Greer’s privacy.
