Originally named Charles Lempriere Prince and born on May 7, 1950, in Charlotte, North Carolina, United States, Prairie Prince is an American rock drummer who is also a talented painter, muralist, and graphic designer. A founding member of Journey as well as a member of The Tubes, he has a diverse musical background. Chris Isaak (on his first four albums), Todd Rundgren, Brian Eno, David Byrne, XTC, Tom Waits, Paul Kantner, George Harrison, Dick Dale, Glenn Frey, Richard Marx, Bill Spooner, Neil Hamburger, John Fogerty, Nick Hopkins, Tommy Bolin, Phil Lesh, and former Tubes and Grateful Dead keyboardist Vince Welnick are among the artists with whom he has collaborated. Many musicians, including The Tubes, Todd Rundgren (for his 1981 album Healing), Journey, Lyle Workman, and Vince Welnick (for his 1998 album Missing Man Formation), have used his album cover artwork as inspiration, among others. With his artistic collaborator and former Tubes member Michael Cotten, he has designed stage sets for a wide range of musicians, including Michael Jackson, Billy Joel, Bette Midler, N’Sync, Shania Twain, Styx, The Tubes, and Todd Rundgren, among others. In addition to the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Prince and Cotten have worked with choreographer Kenny Ortega on a number of major special events, including the Super Bowl XXX Half Time Show (which featured Diana Ross singing “Take Me Higher” as she was lifted from the field in a helicopter), Michael Jackson’s “This is It” concert, and Shania Twain’s residency, SHANIA: STILL THE ONE, at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada. Together with Ross Valory, bassist for and founding member of Journey, Prince created a line of environmentally friendly, USA produced hoodies called MouthMan, in which graphic images of jaws and teeth on the sleeves come together to resemble a mouth when the user “hugs themselves”. During his 2006 tour with The New Cars, he shared the stage with Todd Rundgren, bassist Kasim Sulton (a former Utopia bandmate of Rundgren’s), original The Cars guitarist Elliot Easton, and keyboardist/keyboardist Greg Hawkes. He also continues to collaborate with artists such as The Tubes and Todd Rundgren. As a founding member of Jefferson Starship – The Next Generation, he appeared on both of the band’s studio albums (the 1999 release Windows of Heaven and the 2008 release Jefferson’s Tree of Liberty), as well as on a number of their live recordings. Prince’s obligations with The Tubes and Todd Rundgren necessitated his being sometimes replaced by various drummers on Jefferson Starship’s tours. Among the most noteworthy replacements were Trey Sabatelli, former Jefferson Starship drummer Donny Baldwin, and Tony Morley, to name a few. During the first quarter of 2008, Prince revealed that he was quitting the band on amicable terms and that he would continue to be available for overseas appearances. He has continued to play and tour with The Tubes and Todd Rundgren, among other groups. He is in high demand as a session musician, and he recently contributed drums and percussion to Chuck Prophet’s 2012 album Temple Beautiful, which was released earlier this year.
