In 1974, he began working at KWWL as a sports director, and he now holds the distinction of being Iowa’s longest-serving anchor. Iowa City-based KWWL-TV is the NBC affiliate for the Cedar Rapids, Waterloo, Iowa City, and Dubuque television markets. While he was still the sports director at KWWL, he worked as a play-by-play announcer for NBC Sports and ESPN. His other travels have taken him to Saudi Arabia during the Persian Gulf War, to the White House when the hostages returned from Iran, and aboard Air Force One, where he conducted an interview with President George W. Bush.
