Sadly, we say goodbye to Richard Laviolette, who passed away on September 5, 2023, at the age of 41. Laviolette was not just a musician but also an academic achiever. He delivered the valedictorian speech at Chesley District High School and continued his high school studies at Owen Sound Vocational Collegiate Institute.
A Scholarly Pursuit
Richard’s dedication to education led him to the University of Guelph, where he aimed to become a public school teacher. However, his passion for music never waned. His passing has touched the hearts of fans and fellow musicians who admired his exceptional voice and songwriting skills. Mudtown Records, in particular, celebrated his vibrant and joyous performances.
A Farewell to Remember
As Richard Laviolette’s family mourns his loss, plans for a public memorial service in Guelph are underway for later this year. His battle with Huntington’s disease, which he faced since May 2023, ultimately led to his decision to opt for Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD).
Understanding Huntington’s Disease
Huntington’s disease is a hereditary condition that gradually damages and causes the death of nerve cells in the brain. This cruel disease posed significant challenges for Richard, affecting his ability to sing and play the guitar. His health struggles began at a young age when he battled Ulcerative Colitis, which led to a life-saving total colectomy at just 17.
Overcoming Health Challenges
The medications associated with his earlier surgeries caused severe bone damage, necessitating a hip replacement at the age of 28. Despite these adversities, Richard Laviolette remained unwavering in his dedication to music, using it as a source of solace and therapy.
A Lasting Legacy
Richard’s legacy will live on, with a tree to be planted in his honor in the Wall-Custance Memorial Forest. His courageous battle against Huntington’s Disease shed light on the hardships faced by those afflicted with this relentless neurodegenerative disorder, both physically and mentally. His resilience and musical contributions will be fondly remembered by all.
