Patricia Era Bath (November 4, 1942, Harlem, Manhattan, New York) is an ophthalmologist, inventor, and academic in the United States. In a variety of ways, she has paved the way for women and African Americans. No woman had ever worked on the staff of the Jules Stein Eye Institute, directed a post-graduate ophthalmology training programme, or been chosen to the honorary staff of the UCLA Medical Center before Bath (an honour bestowed on her after her retirement). Before Bath, no black person had ever worked as an ophthalmology resident at New York University, and no black woman had ever worked as a surgeon at UCLA. Bath is the first African-American female doctor to be granted a medical patent. Cataracts are treated using her Laserphaco Probe. She is the creator of the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness in Washington, D.C., and the owner of four patents.
