Angela Yvonne Davis (born January 26, 1944) is a political activist, academic, and author from the United States of America. She rose to prominence as a counterculture activist and radical in the 1960s as a leader of the Communist Party of the United States of America. Through her involvement in the Civil Rights Movement, she developed close ties with the Black Panther Party, despite the fact that she was never an official member of the organisation. Her passions include prisoner rights, and she is the creator of Critical Resistance, an organisation dedicated to the abolition of the prison-industrial complex in the United States. Her research interests include feminism, African-American studies, critical theory, Marxism, popular music, social consciousness, and the philosophy of mind. She is a retired professor from the History of Consciousness Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and a former director of the university’s Feminist Studies department.Davis was arrested, charged, tried, and acquitted of conspiracy in the 1970 armed takeover of a Marin County courtroom, in which four people died. Her membership in the Communist Party led to Ronald Reagan’s request in 1969 that she be prevented from teaching at any institution in the state of California because of her political affiliation. During the 1980s, she was a candidate for Vice President on the Communist Party USA’s presidential ticket twice.
