Since its beginnings in 1972, Atari (from a Japanese phrase meaning “to strike the target”) has been controlled by various companies, the most recent of which being Atari Interactive, a subsidiary of the French publisher Atari, SA (ASA). Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney established Atari, Inc. in 1972, which pioneered arcade games, home video game systems, and personal computers. From the 1970s through the mid-1980s, the company’s products, such as Pong and the Atari 2600, helped define the electronic entertainment business. Due to its involvement in the 1983 video game collapse, Atari Inc. was separated in 1984, and the arcade business was renamed Atari Games Inc.
