Afro-American businesswoman Janice Bryant Howroyd (born September 1, 1952) is a successful entrepreneur. The ACT-1 Group, which she founded and now serves as chief executive officer, is the biggest minority-owned employment agency in the United States. She was born in Tarboro, North Carolina, and graduated from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in English. Following graduation, she relocated to Los Angeles, California, where she began working for the Billboard magazine. In 1978, she opened a tiny Beverly Hills office and signed her first client, Billboard, as a client of ACT-1.
Today, the business has offices in 75 locations throughout the United States, and its customers include Ford Motor Company, Cingular Wireless, and Sempra Energy, to name a few. According to the Black Enterprise magazine, Howroyd’s business ranked third on their list of the Top Black-Owned Industrial/Service Companies in the United States in 200In 2005, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her contributions to the Spirit of American Enterprise. Three years later, she was awarded Entrepreneur of the Year by the BET cable television network, which broadcasts in the United States. In 2013, the Joseph Papp Racial Harmony Award was presented to her by the Foundation for Ethnic Understanding in recognition of her efforts to improve racial relations in the community.
