Pierino Ronald “Perry” Como was an American musician and television personality who lived from May 18, 1912 until May 12, 200He recorded solely for the RCA Victor label after joining with them in 1943 and had a career lasting more than half a century. Mr. C., as he was known, sold millions of albums for Radio Corporation of America (RCA) and created a weekly musical variety television programme that set the bar for the genre and was one of the most popular in television history. From 1949 through 1963, Como was seen regularly on television, and from 1964 to 1967, he hosted the Kraft
Music Hall variety show on a monthly basis. His television programmes and holiday specials were seen all over the globe. Perry Como was also a famous recording artist who had a number of hit songs; no other performer at the time had a combination of television and popular recordings like him. Como’s appeal transcended decades, and he was highly admired for his professional standards as well as his personal behaviour. His life was summarised up in a few lines in the official RCA Records Billboard magazine memorial: “A life well spent and 50 years of music. A role model for everyone.” Ervin Drake, a composer, wrote of him, “… [o]ccasionally, someone like Perry comes along and refuses to ‘go with the flow,’ despite the fact that he is surrounded by many people who implore him to conform to their ideals. Only on rare occasions.” Como’s emphasis on his ideals of good taste was one of the main reasons in his success; if he thought anything was in terrible or poor taste, it wasn’t in the running.
