Robert Lee Morris is a jewellery designer and sculptor who draws inspiration from natural shapes he admires. He has created designs in gold, silver, and bronze, and is renowned for his 24 carat matte gold plating and beautiful deep red copper and green patina. Kansai Yamamoto, Calvin Klein, Anne Klein, Karl Lagerfeld, Michael Kors, and Donna Karan are among the fashion designers with whom he has worked or created collections. After World War II, his parents were stationed in Nuremberg, Germany, where he was born. His father served in the United States Air Force. They were also stationed in Japan for four years when he was nine, and subsequently in Brazil. In 1969, he received an honours diploma from Beloit College.
Morris was found by New York gallery owner Joan Sonnabend in 1971 and initially showed at her art jewellery outpost, Sculpture to Wear, at the Plaza Hotel. He established the first version of Artwear Gallery at 28 East 74th Street on the Upper East Side, in the couture area on Madison Avenue, shortly after Sculpture to Wear closed in 197In August 1978, Artwear moved to SoHo, where it would be flanked by contemporary art galleries. A second, bigger facility built nearby a few years later, followed by a third on Madison Avenue in what is now the Sony building. A temporary site on Düsseldorf’s Königsallee was short-lived. Morris shuttered Artwear in 1995, and the RLM Robert Lee Morris Gallery debuted at 400 West Broadway in September of that year.
