convicted murderer and former death row prisoner in Louisiana, Wilbert Rideau (born February 13, 1942) is also an author and award-winning jail journalist who has written for a number of publications. In the beginning, Rideau was convicted of murder and sentenced to prison in the Louisiana State Penitentiary (Angola). He was freed in 2005 after being retried and convicted of manslaughter, a lower penalty than the murder accusation against him. Rideau was described to as “the most rehabilitated prisoner in America” in a Life magazine storey published in March 199Rideau worked as an editor for The Angolite, a prison journal published while he was in jail. He has also authored a number of books and anthologies of poetry.
